When little Yorkshire Terrier Ozzy was rescued from the RSPCA, nobody could have guessed that one of his favourite snacks would turn out to be… hairbands!

At the end of April, Ozzy’s owner was astonished when he vomited up nine elastic hairbands. Despite this unusual event, he seemed bright and happy afterwards, so everyone hoped that was the end of the story.

Unfortunately, several weeks later, in the middle of May, Ozzy became unwell. Late one night he started vomiting repeatedly, became lethargic, shaky, and developed diarrhoea. Concerned about how poorly he was, his owner brought him straight to us.

Our vet Katy was on duty that night and she examined Ozzy and carried out blood tests. He was dehydrated, so he was admitted to hospital, placed on intravenous fluids and given medication to help control his sickness while we monitored him closely.

The following day, further investigations revealed the culprit. X-rays showed a large number of hair bands sitting in Ozzy’s stomach. It quickly became clear that he hadn’t quite kicked his hairband habit!

Ozzy was taken straight to surgery by vets Cliff and Claire, where we carefully opened his stomach and removed a sizeable collection of elastic hairbands that had become trapped inside.

Thankfully, the surgery went very well, and Ozzy made an excellent recovery. He’s now back home, feeling much more like himself—and hopefully keeping a safer distance from hair accessories in future!

Cases like Ozzy’s are a great reminder that dogs can sometimes swallow the most unexpected objects. If your pet is vomiting, seems lethargic, or you suspect they may have eaten something they shouldn’t, it’s always worth getting them checked as soon as possible.

We’re delighted to report that Ozzy is doing brilliantly and is back to enjoying life. ❤️
